Introducing PNAC 2.0

Today in Washington D.C., neoconservatives William Kristol, Robert Kagan, and Dan Senor will officially launch their new war incubator -- The Foreign Policy Initiative -- with a half-day conference on "the path to success in Afghanistan" (never mind the fact that Kagan and Kristol declared that "the endgame seems to be in sight in Afghanistan" almost seven years ago). Kristol, editor of the Weekly Standard, and Kagan, Carnegie Endowment fellow and Washington Post columnist, have long histories of advocating policies that rely heavily on the United States exerting its influence throughout the world by using military force. Senor, who has stayed relatively under the radar, served as Coalition Provisional Authority spokesman in Iraq under L. Paul Bremer. But as the New Yorker's George Packer noted, Senor "slowly lost his credibility in the daily press briefings he gave...during the first year of the occupation of Baghdad." In its initial focus on the war in Afghanistan, FPI chose heavy representation of Iraq war advocates for its panelists and guest speakers. As the Wonk Room's Matt Duss recently wrote, "a far better title" for FPI's maiden voyage would be "Afghanistan: Dealing With The Huge Problems Created By Many Of The People On This Very Stage."

'PNAC=MISSION ACCOMPLISHED': Kristol and Kagan -- with support from Dick Cheney, Paul Wolfowitz, and Donald Rumsfeld -- co-founded the Project for a New American Century (PNAC) in the late 1990s with the mission "to shape circumstances before crises emerge, and to meet threats before they become dire." Military force was always an option, and often the preferred one. Indeed, the group led the charge to get President Clinton to sign the Iraq Liberation Act in 1998, and it served as a key lobby for the invasion of Iraq in 2003. But with neoconservatism now all but dead and its principles soundly rejected in the 2006 and 2008 elections, the face of PNAC 2.0 -- The Foreign Policy Initiative -- is less bellicose. Indeed, as Duss recently noted, "this new very innocuous sounding Foreign Policy Institute" indicates that neoconservatives "understand that they have something of an image problem," adding that it is "encouraging" that they "have some relation to reality." Yet there is no reason to believe there will be much of an ideological shift from its its predecessor, as its main founders -- especially Kristol -- are still deeply wedded to neoconservatism. Has President Obama Received The Equivalent To The August 6th, PDB?

I don't know if you heard, but the United States has been threatened by someone named Baitullah Mehsud. "Soon we will launch an attack in Washington that will amaze everyone in the world."

I've never heard his name before myself, but historycommons.org has. Apparently Benazir Bhutto named him as one of her possible assassins. According to two reports from Oct. 2008, he died from kidney failure (hat tip to Reprehensor). This wouldn't be the first person to die, and come back from the grave.

I was sitting here, reading about the possible fantastic news concerning the environmental disaster that was 9/11, and it dawned on me. If we're getting threatened now, has Obama received the equivalent to the August 6th, PDB? How about the July 10th, 2001 warning, or the June 30th, 2001 warning, or how about you just go here and read about the different types of warnings received?

Has he? Does he have a piece of paper with this person's name on it? Is there something he could be doing to ensure that we are protected? Is there a specific target that he is aware of? If so, then NOW would be a good time to do something about it, and warn those who need to be in the know.

If this warning came from a legitimate source of course.

A word of advice for President Obama. If you're sitting in a classroom with a room full of children, and you are told that "America is under attack," do me a favor... tell the children politely that you have to go because there are matters you have to attend to, allow the secret service to get you to a safe location, and make sure you've got good communications equipment with you so you can deal with the situation.

Nearly 8 years after 9/11, Rush tells NY to 'drop dead'

Conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh, who has been treated like a GOP leader since Obama's election, didn't mince words when it came to pontificating on a new New York tax plan which reportedly aims at the state's highest earners.

"Drop dead," the self-proclaimed "El Rushbo" wrote on Monday.

Newsmax reports, "Angered by a New York state plan to tax residents earning over $500,000 per year, conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh vowed Monday to sell all of his property and shut down his operations there and move them to Texas, a state with no income tax."

Rush railed on his show, "When I am there working I pay whatever, you know, my rate is based on income for that day in New York. And I try to go as little as possible. If it weren't for hurricanes down here, I would never go up there. New York is the escape valve in case hurricanes are showing up in our area, because of the loss of electricity. So I'll tell you what I'm going to do. I'm going to look for an alternative studio somewhere outside New York, perhaps Texas -- another no-income-tax state -- and I'm going to get the hell over there, when a hurricane starts coming our way, 'cause I told Mayor Bloomberg: I'll be the first to lead the way. You know, this is just... I'll sell my apartment. I'll sell my condominium. I'm going to get out of there totally, 'cause this is just absurd, and it's ridiculous -- and it isn't going to work. G20 summit: SAS on standby if terrorists strike

Ahead of G20 summit, council told to switch off illegal £15m CCTV network

The security operation at this week's G20 summit was thrown into chaos last night when it emerged that the entire network of central London's wireless CCTV cameras will have to be turned off because of a 'legal ruling.'

The Department for Transport (DfT) has ruled that Westminster council's mobile road cameras - a third of the authority's CCTV network - "do not fully meet the resolution standards required" and must be switched off by midnight tomorrow.

The blackout begins on the eve of the summit, when world leaders arrive in the capital and protesters take to the streets.
