Activist Releases Archive of Suppressed News Videos

In a move sure to send shockwaves through the online activist community, Jonathon Elinoff—activist, researcher, and the filmmaker behind the Core of Corruption documentary series—has released a video archive of dozens of network news broadcasts detailing controversial and suppressed news stories.

The archive, compiled over a period of several years, features actual network news coverage of the Trilateral Commission, the shadow government that went into operation on 9/11, the Bohemian Grove and numerous other topics that the nightly news almost never mentions. Many of the videos (if not all) are being released online for the first time.

Announcing the release of the archive on the email subscription list at CoreofCorruption.com, Elinoff wrote: "This archive is the result of over $10,000 investment from Elinoff and even more from other individuals. I am still looking to connect with other people to get their clips. I will be uploading everything I have over the course of the next year, since I have over 4,000 clips so far and even more coming. I am labeling them but do not yet have them organized. I would like to launch a project similar to HisotryCommons.org and build a database using these clips."

The value of this archive should be immediately obvious to those activists and concerned citizens seeking to bring awareness to these controversial subjects. They serve as tools for educting those members of the public still under the spell of corporate media propaganda who refuse to believe an organization, group, problem or topic even exists unless they see it on the nightly news. Now, even those who only trust the corporate media mouthpieces can finally confront the reality of the Bohemian Grove, the BCCI Octopus, 9/11 insider trading and many other amazing stories.

Preserve: In an age where YouTube is looking more and more like the memory hole from Orwell's 1984, and where many other corporate-controlled websites and video sites aren't far behind, the most important thing anyone can do is to make sure this archive is backed up. Download important videos (or the entire archive) using software like Download Helper (FireFox extension) or websites like KeepVid.com that will download the video for you. Save copies on your hard drive or burn them to disk. Upload the videos to other video-sharing sites and even re-upload them to YouTube with different titles. If the data is spread out all over the web the censors won't be able to take it down so easily.

Inform: An educational tool like this is only of value if people know about it. Please distribute information about the archive in whatever way you can. If you have a website, blog about it. If you have an email list, send them the link to the archive or to this article. If you have friends, burn some of the clips on a CD or DVD and give it to them.

Contribute: While Jonathon Elinoff's vision and foresight in compiling and releasing this archive is commendable, it should not be seen as unique. Anyone can help to expand this archive or to create their own. Digitize any VHS tapes of old news broadcasts you may have or upload any digital clips you already possess that aren't widely available. Start recording news with an eye to preserving important news stories that slip past the editors. Send away for copies of important broadcasts from archival companies and services like C-Span Archives and Vanderbilt Archives.

Analyze: The archive is already massive and sure to get even larger in the future. No one can keep track of all of the data contained in it, and sometimes important pieces of the puzzle get lost in the flood of information. If you notice an important detail in one of the videos that no one else has, or if you have a different angle or insight into one of the stories, write an article about it. Jet fuel, which is basically kerosene that burns at about 400c, on 9/11 took on the qualities of an explosive demolition agent, vaporizing 70 tons of aircraft into a puff of smoke and causing 110-story buildings to collapse into a pile of rubble. A PRIMER ON “MARTIAL LAW”

It is difficult these days not to come upon some pessimistic patriotic commentator expressing the fear that something called “martial law” may soon be imposed on this country, as the General Government’s response to a new “terrorist attack”, or to the economic and social chaos arising out of a collapse of the monetary and banking systems, or to some other dire event that frightens hapless Americans into trading a sure and certain loss of their liberties for a dollop of conjectural safety.

An optimistic patriot might scoff at such fears. But both pessimists and optimists typically share the same implicit first premise: namely, that the form of “martial law” they have in mind is legitimate. Most of the time, this is a rather glaring and dangerous error.

Ridge backpedals on pressure to raise terror alert level

Former Homeland Security secretary Tom Ridge, speaking for the first time about accusations made in his new book, says he did not mean to suggest that other top Bush administration officials were playing politics with the nation's security before the 2004 presidential election.

"I'm not second-guessing my colleagues," Ridge said in an interview about The Test of Our Times, which comes out Tuesday and recounts his experiences as head of the nation's homeland security efforts in the first several years after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

In the book, Ridge portrays his fledgling department as playing second fiddle to other Cabinet-level heavyweights. As secretary, he says he was never invited to participate in National Security Council meetings, he was left out of the information loop by the FBI and his proposal to establish Homeland Security offices in major cities such as New Orleans were rejected.

His most explosive accusation: that Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and Attorney General John Ashcroft pressed him to raise the national threat level after Osama bin Laden released a videotape criticizing President Bush shortly before Election Day 2004. Ridge writes he rejected raising the level because bin Laden had released nearly 20 such tapes since 9/11 and the latest contained nothing suggesting an imminent threat.

Noting that Bush's approval ratings typically went up when the threat level was raised, Ridge writes that Ashcroft and Rumsfeld pushed to elevate it during a "vigorous" discussion.

"Ashcroft strongly urged an increase in the threat level, and was supported by Rumsfeld," he writes. "There was absolutely no support for that position within our department. None. I wondered, 'Is this about security or politics?' " More

Flight 93 Memorial construction to start in Nov.

The federal government will pay about $9.5 million to acquire land so the Flight 93 National Memorial can be built by the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said Monday.

With the National Park Service reaching agreements with eight landowners, construction is expected to start in November, Salazar said.

Salazar called the site where the plane crashed, near Shanksville in rural southwestern Pennsylvania, hallowed ground and said the nation was "eternally grateful for the heroes of Flight 93."

United Flight 93 was traveling from Newark, N.J., to San Francisco when it was diverted by hijackers with the likely goal of crashing it into the White House or Capitol. Iraq bombers were recently freed by US: official

Two truck bombers who killed 95 people in devastating attacks on the Iraqi finance and foreign ministries were recently released from US custody, a senior interior ministry official said on Sunday.

"The suicide bomber who blew himself up at the ministry of foreign affairs was released three months ago from Camp Bucca," the official told AFP on condition of anonymity, referring to the US jail near Basra.

"The suicide bomber who blew himself up outside the ministry of finance was also released a few months ago from the same jail."

The August 19 attacks in Baghdad also wounded 600 people in the worst day of violence to hit the country for 18 months.

"We have no proof that a former detainee was involved in the bombings," a US army spokesman said on Sunday.

"The government of Iraq is still investigating the attacks, and it would be inappropriate for us to speculate as to who may have been involved while the investigation is ongoing."

National Geographic Channel special aims to debunk

Intended to address the issues raised by people who question the official story of the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, the documentary “9/11: Science and Conspiracy” probably won’t change anyone’s mind on either side.

Airing tonight, Monday, Aug. 31, at 8 p.m. on the National Geographic Channel, the two-hour program depicts several scientific experiments that have been staged to answer the major points raised by the conspiracy theorists.

The documentary, however, doesn’t feel scientific. It often falls back on standard devices to build tension: hushed narration, ominous music, quick cuts to darkened or bleached-out shots of wreckage.

The sound and look clash radically with the documentary’s purpose, making it seem like one of those old “In Search of…” shows, which were intended to question official versions of events, not support them.

The experiments are presented in a more straightforward fashion: Well-credentialed experts attempt to reconstruct events in the attacks that the skeptics, known as “truthers,” say couldn’t have happened the way they were supposed to. More
