Australian accountant faces terrorism charges

Two men, including a US-Australian dual citizen, have been charged with conspiring to give computer advice, buy wrist watches and do other tasks to help al-Qaeda "modernise."

A vaguely worded indictment unsealed on Friday (US time) in the federal court in Manhattan accused Wesam El-Hanafi, who was born in Brooklyn, of travelling to Yemen to meet with unnamed al-Qaeda members in February 2008.

The terrorists "instructed him on operational security measures and directed him to perform tasks for al-Qaeda," the indictment says. While there, he also "took an oath of allegiance to al-Qaeda," it adds. More

Nearly nine years, two recessions and thousands of conspiracy theories later, the U.S. government has made it official: Initial speculation after the 9/11 terrorist attacks that plotters made financial bets against airlines or other companies hurt by the events was unfounded.

The Securities and Exchange Commission began its inquiry into the matter on Sept. 12, 2001, and went on to examine trading in the U.S. and foreign securities markets that took place between Aug. 20 of that year and Sept. 11. While the agency wrapped up its investigation in May 2002, and there were references to the SEC's conclusions in the report by the federal 9/11 Commission, the findings were kept secret.

But the privately operated, nonpartisan National Security Archives fought for six years to make the SEC report public, an effort aided by the Obama administration's push to declassify documents across the spectrum of government affairs. U.S. seeking a plea agreement in case of Guantanamo detainee

The Obama administration is actively seeking a plea agreement in the case of Canadian detainee Omar Khadr to avoid trying someone on war crimes charges who was detained as a juvenile, according to senior officials.

The administration officials said that they believe they have a solid case against Khadr, who was 15 when he was captured in Afghanistan in 2002, but that they fear his trial will undermine the validity of military commissions, which Congress modified in 2009 in an effort to extend more due process to defendants.

"This is not what you would choose to open with," said a senior administration official, speaking of a planned July trial for Khadr, who is accused of throwing a grenade that killed a U.S. Special Forces medic. "Khadr has become a cause, and this is not a case that will demonstrate the strength and validity of military commissions." More

Three Canadian universities will be used as a venue for a speaking tour by prominent 9-11 skeptics who believe controlled explosions — not airplanes — brought down the Twin Towers.

Minot Air Force Base Airman Killed

Remember the B-52 bomber that had six nuclear weapons loaded onto it by accident?

The body of a missile combat crew commander from the Minot Air Force Base was found by police, and the cause of his death is under investigation, the Air Force says.

A statement issued by the base Sunday said the body of Capt. Jonathan Bayless, 28, was found Friday night. Police did not give details but said it was in an area north of the city soccer complex, and they are awaiting autopsy results. More

State Department to leave Chechen rebel group off terror list

The State Department's update of its annual list of official terrorist groups is imminent, but the group that just attacked Moscow won't be on the list.

The Caucasus Emirate, which has been waging a jihad against the Russian government, is led by Doku Umarov, who calls himself the "emir of the North Caucasus." He was previously President of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, but dissolved that Republic and established the Emirate in its place in 2007 in order to impose sharia law in his territory.

Umarov declared all the way back in 2007 that his group was expanding its struggle to wage war against the United States, Great Britain, and Israel. Last month, he released a video claiming credit for the suicide attacks in Moscow in March that resulted in the deaths of 39 people.

But apparently, the State Department chose not to include Caucasus Emirate in the newest update to its list of foreign terrorist organizations, according to Rep. Alcee Hastings, D-FL, who is calling on the State Department to add the group for the sake of national security and U.S. -Russia relations. More

Did Osama bin Laden Confess to the 9/11 Attacks, and Did He Die, in 2001?

In 2009, I published a little book entitled Osama bin Laden: Dead or Alive?1 Much evidence, I showed, suggested that Osama bin Laden had died on or about December 13, 2001. (Although this book was ignored by the US press, it received major reviews in British newspapers,2 and it even provided the basis for a BBC special.3) Pointing out that the only evidence to the contrary consists of “messages from bin Laden” in the form of audiotapes and videotapes that have appeared since 2001, I devoted one chapter to an examination of the most important of these tapes, showing that none are demonstrably authentic and that some are almost certainly fakes.

In the chapter preceding that examination, I discussed two videotapes containing purported interviews of Osama bin Laden in the fall of 2001, when the issue was whether he had been responsible for the 9/11 attacks. I suggested that both of these tapes, in which bin Laden allegedly admitted his responsibility, were fakes. If they were, I pointed out, this fact would increase the likelihood that all of the “Osama bin Laden tapes” appearing in the following years – when the question of whether he was still alive was added to that of his responsibility for 9/11 – were also fakes.
