9/11 Victims’ Families Group: Sept. 11 Mosque Protests ‘Disrespect The Memories Of Our Loved Ones’

One of the chief arguments critics have employed against the construction of the proposed Islamic center near Ground Zero in New York is that the center would be “insensitive” to the families of the victims of the 9/11 terror attacks. “[T]he overriding concern should be the sensitivities of the families of the victims,” wrote Abe Foxman of the Anti-Defamation League, who surprised many by coming out against the Islamic center. “The question here is a question of sensitivity, people’s feelings,” said former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani. Some 9/11 families “are crying over this,” he added.

Guantanamo trial of Canadian to resume in October

The trial of the youngest detainee at Guantanamo Bay will resume in October following a two-month delay caused by the sudden illness of his attorney, a Pentagon spokeswoman said Tuesday.

The same jury panel of seven U.S. military officers will return to the U.S. Navy base in southeastern Cuba to pick up the proceedings against Omar Khadr on Oct. 18, according to Army Maj. Tanya Bradsher, the spokeswoman.

The trial has been on hold since Khadr's only attorney, Army Lt. Col. Jon Jackson, collapsed in the courtroom shortly after opening arguments on Aug. 12. Jackson had recently undergone gall bladder surgery and was flown to Walter Reed Army Medical Center near Washington for treatment. More

What was the emotional timeline of September 11, 2010? A fascinating study of this topic was released yesterday in Psychological Science, authored by Mitja Back, Albrecht Kupfer, and Boris Egloff of Johannes Gutenberg University.

The authors analyzed 6.4 million words from messages sent on 85,000 different pagers on September 11. The messages are anonymous and apparently available publicly on the internet. They sorted the messages into 5-min blocks, according to the time they were sent, and analyzed 216 time blocks.

They started with messages sent at 6:45 a.m. (2 hours before the first attack) and analyzed those through the 18 hours after the attack. Using software developed by Jamie Pennebaker and his colleagues, the authors counted the percentage of words in each block related to (a) sadness (crying, grief), (b) anxiety (worried, fearful), and (c) anger (hate, annoyed).
